Teaching Artist Institute (TAI) proudly announces the highly anticipated return of the “Underground Railroad Leadership Camp and Excursion”. Taking history off the page this will be a transformative experience designed to inspire leadership, resilience, and connection to nature. Set against the backdrop of historically significant spaces and natural settings, this mesmerizing journey promises participants an unforgettable adventure filled with learning, exploration, and personal growth.

Scheduled to take place later in the year, the Underground Railroad Leadership Camp and Excursion offers a diverse range of activities tailored to empower participants and foster a deeper understanding of history, leadership, and the natural world. From overnight camping tutorials to leadership development courses, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences that promote teamwork, critical thinking, and personal reflection.

Rooted in the legacy of the Underground Railroad and inspired by Harriet Tubman’s spirit of resilience and liberation, this program seeks to cultivate the next generation of leaders who are committed to creating positive change in their communities and beyond.

Participants can look forward to breakfast and lunch each day, on-ground transportation and accommodation, a swimming crash course, kayaking 101, mountain hiking, and an indigenous land appreciation course. Additionally, guided excursions to Shenandoah Valley National Park will provide opportunities for participants to connect with nature, reflect on history, and build lasting friendships with fellow campers.

TAI recognizes the importance of providing meaningful experiences that nurture both the mind and spirit. Through a combination of outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, and leadership development, we aim to empower participants to discover their own strengths, passions, and potential for social transformation.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experienced educators, historians, and outdoor experts who are dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for all.

The Underground Railroad Leadership Camp and Excursion will feature wilderness medicine courses, storytelling sessions, and evening campfires for reflection and camaraderie.Participants will experience an Indigenous Land Appreciation Course,Luray Caverns, Fresh Juicing andHealth Coaching. This exciting camp will endwith a very extraordinary “Closing Waterpark & Restaurant Celebration”
